An introduction to finite element analysis, non symmetric beam analysis and 2D stress-strain analysis, load estimating, flight envelopes and airworthiness requirements, material phase composition and microstructure of equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems.
On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to: " understand and apply numerical (finite element) and analytical methods of solutions to bar and beam structures using manual or computer techniques; " carry out 2D stress-strain analysis; " analyse beams with arbitrary shape and loading; " interpret common forms of equilibrium diagrams; " predict the composition and microstructure of equilibrium and non-equilibrium alloy systems; " demonstrate an introductory knowledge of possible strengthening mechanisms, together with specific knowledge of some metal alloy systems which are important in an engineering context and general experimental techniques. " make load estimates and construct and interpret flight envelopes for airworthiness requirements.

30% - Assessed Coursework on Finite Element analysis, Material Selections, Metallic Alloy Microstructure and Beam Loading Response. 70% - 3 Hour examination in May/June, 5 questions to be answered out of 7
