This unit will teach students the knowledge and skills needed to plan and assess health promotion programmes within the context of current health promotion frameworks, public policy and engagement. Students will also learn how impact, public engagement and service user/community partnerships are needed and contribute to health promotion programmes. This unit will incorporate and build upon the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier units, such as knowledge of physical activity and nutrition, understanding of determinants of physical activity and nutrition and theory, and designing interventions.
Aim: To critically evaluate and apply analytical skills in appraising how health promotion programmes are planned and implemented, integrating concepts of partnerships, engagement and impact.
To be able to:
The main teaching methods will be lectures plus small group exercises. Teaching will be delivered over 2 full teaching days. Each day will be of approximately 5 hours duration.
Students will be required to critically evaluate a recent or current public health programme or campaign (national or local) which promotes either increased physical activity or improved diet (or both). Students will need to align a chosen campaign/programme with one of the frameworks covered in the unit, as well as analyse and evaluate public engagement, service user and community partnerships, impact, and knowledge transfer in relation to the public health promotion programme under scrutiny. This summative assessment will be through a 2000 word critical essay.
