Description including Unit Aims
This unit is part of a programme which aims to:
- provide a higher degree in orthodontics for dental graduates;
- prepare students for the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) at one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Provide students with a theoretical grounding in the scientific basics of cell and molecular biology along with genetics associated with growth of the craniofacial complex.
- Provide students with the principles of orthodontic treatment and treatment planning - Part I Basic Orthodontic Clinical Practice
- Provide students with the principles and clinical skills relevant to orthodontic practice
- Provide students with the theory of clinical science and research methods
- Provide students with practical understanding of the scientific basis of growth of the craniofacial complex
- Provide students with the principles of orthodontic treatment and treatment planning Part II Advanced Orthodontic Clinical Practice
- Provide students with the principles and clinical skills relevant to orthodontic practice - Part II Advanced Orthodontic Clinical Practice
- Describe, critique and discuss current concepts around the biology of craniofacial growth and development, both normal and abnormal
- Describe the technical, laboratory and material requirements of contemporary orthodontic practice.
- Describe and discuss the assessment of normal craniofacial and somatic growth and development, along with treatment options and modalities of relevance to clinical orthodontic practice.
- Describe, assess and discuss normal and abnormal dento facial development, including psychological development and possible TMD
- Conduct a research project in a focussed area of relevance to orthodontic practice. This will comprise a comprehensive literature, an experimental study (clinical or laboratory based) and completion of a final dissertation.
- Analyse experimental results, critique and apply to clinical practice.
- Communication skills - written, electronic, oral
- Presentation of research written dissertation & oral defence
- Successful use of web-based libraries, search engines, a range of common computer applications, e-mail, Wikis, case presentations, journal clubs.
- Appropriate management of time and resources.
Teaching Information
- Web based VLE - clinical tips videos and audio lectures delivered asynchronously and viewable multiple times.
- Guided, Internet-based, independent study for each module using the VLE comprising interactive modules on both the University of Bristol and National BOS web platforms
- Weekly small group discussion of VLE modules with internal and external teaching staff.
- Regular (usually weekly) case based discussions
- Weekly chair side clinical teaching – diagnosis, treatment planning and supervised treatment of patients
- Independent research and review of current literature in specialised field
- Wiki topic teaching linking topics across modules
- Journal club presentation of contemporary articles and cases under treatment
- Research with close supervision
