This unit forms part of the taught component of the EngD in Composites Manufacture and is intended to provide a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art tools for composite design and manufacture. CATIA and its composite design derivatives/modules will be used in conjunction with finite element analysis (FEA) to promote the Research Engineers' understanding of composite product development, from analysis methods for design to manufacturing.
This hands-on course consists of lectures, tutorials and exercises. An aerospace case study of composite wing design will be demonstrated.
On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to:
1) identify and understand the spectrum of advanced composite product development during the design and analysis phase using state-of-the-art CAD/FEA tools.
2) Carry out conceptual design and manufacturability analysis based on laminate stacking rules to derive a design compliant plybook using CATIA.
3) Perform preliminary FE structural analysis of advanced composite components.
Classroom based with lectures, industry seminars, tutorial classes and demonstrations. Laptops with pre-installed CAD/FEA software will be used throughout the course.
Assessed group technical report (100%)
Students will be required to assess the structural performance of a composite structure based on a design compliant laminate definition using FEA and CATIA composite design modules.
All unit notes and complimentary material will be provided via Blackboard. Students are strongly encouraged to review previous IDC units and fundamentals of FEA and mechanics of composite materials. Further background reading references are:
