Unit Information

Why is this unit important?

The NHS is one of the five largest employers on the planet. With over 1.7
million employees, it relies heavily on developing the capability of it’s people
to deliver its healthcare mission. The ability to support learning, rather than
just teach, is a foundation of this unit and the Certificate programme.

How does this unit fit into your programme of study?

This unit serves as an introduction to the TLHP Certificate course. It aims to support learners in developing skills in planning, delivering and evaluating their own and others’ teaching based on a critical reading of theory and literature within the field. It also aims to introduce the learners to current issues in Teaching and Learning and to support and promote reflection and criticality in this area. Finally, it seeks to develop skills in academic writing within the discipline of Education.

Students must pass this unit to continue with study on the TLHP Certificate programme.

Your learning on this unit

The unit offers an introduction to the planning, delivery and self-evaluation of teaching. It includes practical activities that would enhance own teaching abilities. It introduces students to academic literature and theoretical frameworks at Master’s-level (L7) in the social sciences. There is an expectation that students will complete further work beyond the fixed study days/sessions, in addition to submitting a written summative assignment. Completion of the unit is often helpful in demonstrating capabilities to professional bodies during recruitment processes.

  • Design and plan teaching and learning for varied audiences and settings taking account of educational theory and literature (A1, A2, A3, A4, A6, A7, A8, A9, B2, B3, B4, C4)
  • Deliver and/or support effective teaching and learning in diverse situations and reflect on the outcomes (A2, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, B3, B4, B6, C2, C3,C4)
  • Evaluate teaching and learning in the light of educational theory and reflect on teacher development to support their own and others’ practice (A6, A8, A10, A11, B2, B4, B6, C3, C4)
  • Demonstrate criticality towards educational literature and theory (A5, A6, A8, B1, B2, B5)
  • Develop skills in writing within the academic discipline of Education (A5, A6, A7, A8, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6)

How you will learn

Synchronous on-line group tutorials. Teaching will be based on best practice on-line interactive teaching/ learning, both synchronous and asynchronous and may include: Group work, Discussion, Presentations, Evaluation of case studies and Peer feedback

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment will include the production of varied texts and/or items in other media, contributing to an overarching, programme-level portfolio assessment, employing the concept of the 'patchwork text'.

Each unit will have required items and types of texts to be produced at stated times within the framework of the unit and others will stretch across the entire Certificate permitting learners to demonstrate how they are connecting key concepts and synthesising the material. This provides a more appropriate assessment for the development of understanding and skills in a course where reflection on progress parallels a critical approach to theory.

This unit:

Further formative assessment - reflection on learning, teaching and micro-teach session. Successful completion of formative assessment is necessary to progress.

Summative - a written essay-format assessment of 3000 words. This contributes 100% of final grade for this module.

Essay Title: A reflective, analytical evaluation of the planning and delivery of a teaching session underpinned by a critical consideration of educational theory &literature.

When assessment does not go to plan
In the event of your assignment not reaching a pass at first submission, you may be given the opportunity to resubmit depending on previous unit results. In the event of resubmission, you will be offered a one-to-one tutorial to support you. This will offer clarity on how best to meet the required criteria with your resubmission.

It should be noted that students following a 60-credit Certificate path of study are only able to re-submit in one of the three units undertaken.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MEEDM0040).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
