The objective is to design, build and test an AC-to-DC "Switch-mode Power Supply". In doing this, students are introduced to practical aspects of magnetic design, power electronic components and control system design.
By the end of the SMPS design students should be able to:
Laboratory sessions
Individual laboratory notebook, 30% (ILOs 1, 4)
Online quiz, 50% (All ILOs)
Group Oscilloscope measurement, 5% (ILOs 4, 5)
Group hardware test results, 15% (ILO 2)
Primary sources of information: The SMPS manual; Data books (or manufacturers' datasheets on pc); introductory lectures; PowerPoint slides for each aspect of the work.
