This unit therefore aims to provide a structured and supervised opportunity for second-year students to pursue an industrial placement in a professional context, related to Innovation and your core discipline.
Students choose and arrange their own placements (subject to approval by the External Partnerships Manager in the Centre), with support and guidance from the Centre. The Centre has a number of ongoing relationships with organisations that students seeking placements can draw on.
As part of the placement the student will conduct appropriate tasks under the guidance of a nominated mentor from the host organization, and under the supervision of an allocated tutor from the Centre.
Students will be enabled to develop their work experience and establish links with industry and explore wider questions concerning the professional production context in which the student works.
On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
1.Plan and effectively carry out appropriate Case Study Research in response to a professional context.
2.Demonstrate the development of their skills and acquisition of practical work experience in a professional setting related to their studies in innovation and entrepreneurship.
3.Demonstrate initiative, by identifying individual judgement opportunities and work responsibly in a professional role, carrying out tasks effectively and/or delivering an agreed project.
4.Demonstrate how their selected industry functions practically, within wider innovation and entrepreneurial contexts.
5.Evaluate their own work in a reflective manner, with reference to academic and professional issues, debates, policies and conventions.
Teaching will be delivered using a blend of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including in the
workplace where possible. Meetings with supervisors will initially be in small tutorial groups, which address
approaches to the work placement, then individually.
Mentors Report Pass/Fail [ILOs 1 - 5]
Mentor's report logging the activities completed during the 21-hour industrial placement, evaluated by the academic supervisor. A mentor's report form will be clearly structured to address the appropriate ILOs and will include clear and specific criteria.
Case study, 2000 words (100%) [ILOs 1 - 5]
A 2000-word report, which takes the placement as a case study.
OR
Industry case study, 4000 words (100%), [ILOs1-5]
To be completed where a placement is not possible.
If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.
If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. INOV20003).
How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.
See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.
Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
