The aim of the Group Project is to give students experience of working in a team on a substantial design project. A team consists of four or five students, who have to allocate the work amongst themselves. The project is competitive, and the buggies will be judged on the basis of a formula that includes the time taken to complete the task. Texas Instruments Ltd sponsor a prize which is awarded to the best team.
Elements:
The system to be designed will be based on a supplied mobile unit (a buggy) and will be able to move around an arena populated with a number of ‘targets’ at various locations. The buggy is to be connected to a PC and PSU via an umbilical cord for communication and power supply.
Groups will earn points for assessing a number of targets, placed within an arena, in a timely and elegant manner. The targets contain electrical circuits that may be assessed via conductive contacts. A competition based on a points system will form part of the overall mark for this project.
Each target is to be electrically tested by the buggy and data on its characteristics is to be presented on a PC screen. The arena will also contain ‘blockers’ that mask certain areas. This makes accessing the higher point scoring targets more interesting and also complicates the route-finding algorithm.
