This is a core unit that will equip students with the skills necessary to plan an original research project. The unit will address both academic research skill and the skills required of a professional in the nuclear industry.
This unit provides students with approaches to research and project design. It also, together with Individual Research Project (PHYSM0027), constitutes an individual final project.
Students will work under an assigned project supervisor who will assist in the selection of the project topic. Students spend substantial time on researching, analysing and developing the requirements, project plan and preliminary design for an individual project. There will be a set of lectures and workshops on topics including research methods and industrial project issues. Students will apply
what they have learned during their course to planning and designing an individual project. Students will analyse requirements and apply research methods relevant to the formulation of the approach to their project.
Aims:
1. To ensure that students have the research skills to undertake a research project
2. To research, adapt and apply the knowledge and skills acquired over the core units to plan a substantial individual project.
3. To develop a variety of nuclear science and engineering-specific research skills useful for subsequent studies and employment.
On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to:
Students will be assigned a project supervisor and project title at the start of the unit and will have regular discussion meetings with their project supervisor.
Formative assessment
Students will receive formative feedback through meetings with their supervisor for the unit. (formative feedback on the project plan will also help prepare students for the research project)
Summative assessment
Students are advised individually by their project supervisor(s) on appropriate references depending on their project.
