The two units in this level (Latin A1 and A2) are designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Latin. In them you will learn all the fundamental morphology and syntax of classical Latin. Latin A1 aims to cover chapters 1-6 of ‘Learn to Read Latin’, level A2 to cover chapters 7-11 and excerpts from chapters 12-14. In addition, in A2 you will read a substantial amount of un-adapted Latin. At the conclusion of this course you should be able to read straightforward Latin texts on your own, with the aid of a reference grammar and dictionary.
Aims:
To teach students the techniques of reading straightforward Latin texts with the aid of a dictionary and reference grammar; to enable students place the Latin language in its ancient cultural and literary contexts; and to read at least 250 lines of Latin, of which at least 150 lines should be un-adapted, original Latin poetry or prose.
Students will have acquired and developed knowledge of the terms and procedures of grammatical analysis; a total vocabulary of about 250 Latin words; and skills in the process of translating straightforward Latin into good English – of which at least 150 lines should be un-adapted, original Latin poetry or prose.
