Unit Information

Clinical perfusion practice is constantly evolving with advancements in surgical techniques, equipment development and availability, and the changing demographic and needs of patients. It therefore important that you are aware of and can critically evaluate the latest ideas and practice. This unit will enhance your knowledge and understanding of cutting-edge developments in the field of perfusion and enable you to translate best practice into your clinical workplace. It will include teaching and learning on more specialised aspects of perfusion practice including cardiopulmonary bypass of pregnant patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, organ retrieval and isolated limb perfusion. It will include seminars on ‘hot topics’ related to perfusion science.

An overview of content

Content will include the applications of clinical perfusion science beyond standard cardiopulmonary bypass, including cardiopulmonary bypass of pregnant patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, organ retrieval and isolated limb perfusion. The unit will also consider human factors aspects of clinical perfusion practice, the conduct of simulation training and safety aspects. Seminars in ‘hot topics’ related to clinical perfusion science will be delivered by various University of Bristol clinical staff and external guest lecturers.

You will have a greater knowledge and understanding of advanced perfusion techniques and clinical practice, expanding the breadth and depth of your experience. You will have the confidence to share ideas, develop and change practice in your workplace for the benefit of patients and the clinical team.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop relevant clinical questions within your chosen area of interest.
  2. Understand, evaluate and analyse the scientific and clinical principles of a specific topic within the chosen area of interest to explain and critique the current rationale for practice in this area.
  3. Apply reflective assessment in the analysis and evaluation of learning new knowledge and skills relevant to a clinical perfusion scientist.

How you will learn

Core content will be delivered via on-line asynchronous audio / video lectures supplemented with synchronous and asynchronous seminars on current ‘hot topics’ allowing students to engage flexibly with teaching and learning. Live online interactive discussion tutorials will enhance learning. You will direct your own learning towards speciality areas that you are interested in and are relevant to your career. This unit will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of advanced perfusion science theories, techniques and practice to your areas of interest. Students will be given feedback on all coursework assessments to aid their learning.

How you will be assessed

Tasks which help you learn and prepare you for summative tasks (formative)

To prepare you for your summative tasks, a protocol for a commonly used perfusion practice will be discussed in a small group tutorial (live on-line and asynchronously using an on-line discussion forum). Additional resources, including relevant starter references and brief individual written reflections, will be shared and summarised by the group. Written feedback will be provided.

Tasks which count towards your unit mark (summative):

  • Summary of evidence base and reflection on a current institutional protocol of practice (LO 1-3) (50% of unit mark).
  • Case / incident report and reflection on practice (LO 1-3) (50% of unit mark).

When assessment does not go to plan

If you do not pass the unit, you will normally be given the opportunity to take a reassessment as per the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes. Decisions on the award of reassessment will normally be taken after all taught units of the year have been completed. Reassessment will normally be in a similar format to the original assessment that has been failed.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
