This is a compulsory 100cp unit and an integral part of a 180cp MRes in Advanced Composites. This unit comprises an extended individual project, which serves to prepare the students for their subsequent PhD project.
The aim of the unit is to provide the opportunity for a substantial and original piece of research work of engineering relevance at Master’s level. It may be wholly research or include aspects of novel design, and/ or systems engineering, which is orientated towards theoretical and/or experimental work. Integral to this project are project management skills, communication skills, reasoning skills, originality and creativity in problem solving. Students are also expected to maintain a high standard of record keeping and management of information through an individual logbook.
On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to: - undertake an original research activity - plan and prepare a concise, written technical report in the format of a journal paper - orally present the technical subject, including handling questions and tailoring technical and specialist knowledge and information to a broader audience - adopt a high standard of record keeping and management of information.
Ongoing project supervision provided by project supervisor(s).
Students are advised individually by their project supervisor(s) on appropriate references depending on their choice of project.
