Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore the concept of ‘home’ as it is presented in a range of literary and other artistic works. Students will be encouraged to explore and discuss the cultural traditions with which they are familiar and to relate these to wider debates about how culture shapes individual and collective identity.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students (i) will have been introduced to a range of literary and other works that explore the concept of home; (ii) will have had an opportunity to relate these works to their own experiences and to wider debates about culture and society; and (iii) will have had an opportunity to gain skills that will be useful in further study, including (potentially) on the Reading English Literature unit and the BA English Literature and Community Engagement.

Assessment Information

This unit is designed to be comparable to the BA English Literature and Community Engagement in assessment methods, which (iii) therefore mirror those on 10-credit units within that programme. Assessment for this unit is normally undertaken through a seminar presentation of approximately 8-12 minutes and/or a short essay of between 1,500 and 2,000 words in which students analyse at least one of the works considered in the unit or relevant to it (i), while showing awareness of wider debates and/or the relevance of their own experiences (ii).
