This unit will begin with a description of the history and development of International, European and UK Environmental policy and regulation. This will enable students to examine how policy and regulation has informed economically and environmentally sustainable practices within individual organisations.
The unit includes an outline of: international environmental policy and the institutions which make it; the evolution of UK and EU policy and environmental, water and planning law; the development of environmental policy for an organisation; Environmental Management Systems; Life Cycle Analysis.
This unit will be taught by leading practitioners in the area of environmental policy with support from Environment Agency staff.
At the end of this module, the successful student will be able to:
M6.1 summarise and analyse international, European and national policies, laws and regulations for water and the environment;
M6.2 define Environmental Management Systems and explain how they are used to assess the environmental impact of organisations;
M6.3 critically evaluate the wider impact of environmental economic policy on environmental planning.
The teaching in this unit comprises formal lectures, seminars and group work.
This unit will be assessed (70%) by coursework (a 3000-5000 word assignment relating to part of the unit, but which requires further reading and research), and (30%) by in-unit coursework assessment. Formative assessment/feedback will also be provided throughout the unit from group work and presentations, to help students prepare for the summative assessments.
