This programme aims to develop the student’s interest in and knowledge and understanding of Periodontology. In addition, this programme aims to develop technical practical skills and portfolio build-up skills in Periodontology. The programme is designed to allow dental practitioners to gain in depth knowledge in the supporting structures of teeth and the diseases and conditions that affect them. These include the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. Students qualifying to entering this programme will have had the basic knowledge around this subject during their undergraduate training as a dentist. The principal aim is to equip them with the skills and knowledge to proceed to work as a dentist with special interest in Periodontology. The programme is designed to offer embedded learning experience to the students.
The taught component is split in 6 units which are designed to guide the students towards developing critical thinking to discuss and apply/practice current evidence-based concepts/techniques related to prevention, diagnosis and non-surgical and surgical treatment of periodontal conditions and in the placement of dental implants. Students will have a chance to discuss complex multidisciplinary cases. Practice reflection and portfolio build-up skills will be in line with current NHS recruitment plans for Tier 2 dentists.
Each module will be delivered by a combination of teaching approaches, including one-to-one contact days with conventional lectures, guided practical exercises in manikin heads or anatomy laboratory given by internal and external specialists. In addition, e-learning material will be available with recorded lectures, videos, group case-discussion forums, seminars and guided self-directed learning resources and exercises. A combination of assessment and feedback will also be used in line with the UoB Principles of assessment and feedback and each Unit will have a summative assessment. Self-reflection and peer assessment will be encouraged.
The learning outcomes of the programme and Units are based on The Subject benchmark statement: Dentistry (Master’s); The Curriculum for Specialty Training in Periodontics set by the GDC; The Specialist Training In Periodontics document by the Royal College of Surgeons; and The Intended Learning Outcomes by the UoB.
The dissertation will allow students to produce a substantial and novel piece of work in the field of Periodontology. In addition, engagement with the British Society of Periodontology and European Federation of Periodontology will be encouraged.

Statement of expectations from the students at each level of the programme as it/they develop year on year.
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Certificate |
For a postgraduate Certificate, students are required to complete Unit 1, 2 and 3 of the taught programme. These Units are designed to develop foundational knowledge on evidence-based assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of periodontal conditions. In Unit 1 students will also learn how to critically appraise the evidence at individual and population level and the health economic impact in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. All three units are must-pass units. |
---|---|
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Diploma |
For a postgraduate Diploma, students are required to complete all the taught units in the programme. The programme is designed to progress in difficulty and complexity from Unit 1 to Unit 6. Students completing the Diploma will be able to assess, diagnose, treatment plan and manage complex multi-disciplinary cases. They will also have skills to document and report on such cases. All six units are must-pass units. |
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Masters |
The students will be required to complete all the taught components in addition to the dissertation. Students will apply the intellectual skills developed during the taught components to identify areas of lack of scientific evidence in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and develop a novel piece of research devised in consultation by an allocated supervisor. All seven units are must-pass units. |
The intended learning outcome mapping document shows which mandatory units contribute towards each programme intended learning outcome.
For information on the admissions requirements for this programme please see details in the postgraduate prospectus at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/prospectus/postgraduate/ or contact the relevant academic department.
