TrialNet Studies are focusing on type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes
- Also known as insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) or juvenile diabetes
- Usually develops before the age of 30 and requires insulin treatment immediately
- Autoimmune condition which destroys the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin
Type 2 Diabetes
- Also known as non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes
- Usually occurs over the age of 30 and is controlled by diet and medication or diet and insulin
- Condition in which resistance to insulin develops leaving the pancreas unable to produce enough insulin to compensate
