Teaching spaces
Active Learning Studios
There are over 20 state-of-the-art Active Learning Studios across the building. These are flexible, technology-enabled spaces designed to encourage collaboration, participation and real-world problem-solving, helping you to deepen your subject knowledge while developing essential skills for future workplaces.
Lecture Theatre in-the-Round
One of TQEC’s standout features is the 300+ seat Lecture Theatre in-the-Round - the Bill Brown Forum. With the lecturer in the centre of the room, the space creates a dynamic, engaging and connected experience that will bring teaching and events to life.
Study spaces
- Hundreds of study seats available to all students.
- A mix of bookable and non-bookable spaces.
- Spaces for individual focus or collaborative group work.
Group study rooms
Various collaborative study rooms including:
- For 4-10 people, featuring a display screen and whiteboards to support collaborative work.
- For 22 people, with flexible, reconfigurable furniture and multiple display screens. Ideal for workshops, project sessions and more.
Study pods
Running through the centre of each floor is a long corridor called The Street. It hosts a range of collaborative study pods with display screens and varied furniture to suit different study styles.
Social study areas
There are also social study areas with sofas and coffee tables create more informal spaces for working together or taking a break.
Silent study rooms
For quieter study, there are dedicated silent study rooms on levels 2, 3 and 5. These offer individual booths equipped with monitors or PCs for focused, distraction‑free work.
Student services
Welcome Zone
Staff at the Welcome Zone in the Exchange Hall will be on hand to help you find your way around the building and help with enquiries.
Student Services Hub
At the on-site Student Services Hub, you can access wellbeing services from trained staff.
Library Services Hub
This Hub will run surgery-style sessions covering specialist subject study skills and training – learning resources will be digital-first.
IT Services Counter
The IT counter will offer support for IT queries, incidents and maintenance.
The Bristol SU Living Room
This is a dedicated and inclusive space for you to meet up with others, unwind and connect. It has a wall mounted screen, a seating area, and a kitchen area with microwaves and dining tables.
Multifaith rooms
There will be a Multifaith Room and a Muslim Prayer Room, run by the University’s Multifaith Chaplaincy.
Pop-up services
Regular pop-ups will take place at TQEC, including activities run by The Global Lounge, Careers Service, Sport, Exercise and Health and Bristol SU.
Building design and facilities
Accessibility
The main building at TQEC has been designed to be an accessible, inclusive space. Features include:
- Step free entrance to the building at ground level.
- 9 passenger lifts throughout the building.
- Hearing enhancement systems.
- Neurodiversity-aware colours and internal design.
- Wide corridors to enable wheelchair users to pass and turn.
- A low-distraction entrance.
- 4 bookable low-distraction student study rooms.
- 2, 4-person Sensory Rooms located next to the Bristol SU Living Room.
Toilets
There will be a mix of male, female and gender-neutral toilet facilities on the ground floor. On all other floors, all toilets are fully enclosed gender-neutral toilets, each with its own sink and hand dryer. Every toilet location also has an accessible and ambulant toilet. There is also a family room and changing places facility.
Catering
Food Quarter
A Food Quarter on Level 1 (Managed by Source) serves a variety of diverse, healthy and affordable food options ordered via self-service screens with eat in and takeaway options. It’s connected to the Terrace so on sunny days you can have your lunch overlooking the harbourside.
Source Exchange Café/Bar
The Source Exchange Café/Bar is located in the Exchange Hall and has a dedicated entrance from University Square. It has a seasonal menu, designed for speed, value, and sustainability across breakfast, lunch, and all-day options, available to eat in or takeaway. A bar will also serve a range of drinks.
Convenience store
The store offers a range of international food items, grab-and-go sandwiches and snacks, coffee, essential items (tea, coffee, milk), and takeaway meals to heat up.
Vending machines
Vending machines and water fountains are located in The Streets, plus there is a kiosk located next to the harbourside entrance which will have a variety of vending options.
Kitchen facilities
There are kitchen facilities for students to access in the Bristol SU Living Room.
Spaces for events
The main building at TQEC has a range of bookable event spaces. Some of these include:
- Bristol SU Living Room.
- Civic spaces: The Bristol Rooms and Story Exchange.
- The Bill Brown Forum - the Lecture Theatre in-the-Round, with space for 300+ people.
- Multipurpose Room on the Mezzanine, with 2 nights a week dedicated to student activities.
- Active Learning Studios, with spaces ranging from 10 up to 120 people.
