Why choose Design Engineering?
We know you’ll be considering the best choice for you, so we wanted to highlight for you some of the many reasons why we think the University of Bristol is the best place to study Design Engineering.
Your journey through Design Engineering
Design Engineering at Bristol will allow you to go further into the design aspects of engineering disciplines. The broad range of units offered allows students to customise their degree to match their interests and career plans.
Throughout your degree, we'll introduce you to new skills and engineering knowledge that will support you through your studies and into your career. You’ll also develop your design skills through group workshops and projects co-designed with industry.
Innovation and industry
The South-West is home to a range of innovative industries and our students benefit from our strong connections with companies based in Bristol and beyond. For example, all first-year Engineering students benefit from mentoring from an industry professional through our Industrial Liaison Office.
Those who decide to take the Year in Industry option will take a paid placement at a company after their second year. In the past, our students have had placement experience at companies like Crux Product Design, Kinnier Dufort and Dyson.
Design projects
Collaboration is key for Design Engineers and our students will develop and refine this skill through project work with each other and students from other courses, as well as academic and industry professionals throughout their degree.
Our projects offer the best opportunity for students to develop their drawing, CAD and prototyping skills, as well as their understanding of design processes and methodology. The projects are unique, authentic to industry challenges and encourage students to deliver effective solutions to complex problems.
Students will also develop their communication and presentation skills as each unit culminates in a presentation or demonstration.
Careers
When our first cohort of Design Engineers graduates, they’ll be equipped with excellent design and technical knowledge as well as strong collaboration and leadership skills.
Our Careers Service offer support for up to three years after you graduate and can also provide support to help ambitious students start up their own businesses and develop entrepreneurial skills.
I wish you all the best with your studies and hope to welcome you to the University of Bristol soon.
