Important information about meningitis
The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider campus community remains our highest priority at the University of Bristol.
Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of meningococcal infection. These include one or more of the following, which can develop in any order.
- high temperature
- vomiting or diarrhoea and stomach cramps
- severe headache
- stiff neck
- dislike of bright light
- rash or bruising rash
- rapid breathing
- joint or muscle pain
- cold hands and feet
- pale blotchy skin
- confusion and/or irritability
- drowsiness or difficult to wake
- seizures or fits.
Anyone displaying any of these symptoms should seek medical advice urgently if they feel unwell by dialling 999 or going immediately to the closest Accident and Emergency Department:
- BRI
- Southmead Hospital
- Weston General Hospital.
Students and staff should also check they are up to date with their meningitis vaccines. Students should speak to their GP for vaccine advice.
Useful information on the disease from the NHS is also available.
