End-to-end networks and sensing
Our research brings expertise, infrastructure and technology together to tackle the core challenges of building intelligent, sustainable, secure and resilient end-to-end networks, including networks that can sense as well as connect.
Next-generation networks will not exist in silos. Fixed, mobile, satellite, sensing, edge and cloud resources must converge into a single, coherent system that delivers assured performance and situational awareness from device through to application.
At Smart Internet Lab, we focus on how to:
- orchestrate resources end-to-end across heterogeneous domains (multi-tech access, transport, core, edge, cloud and sensing)
- embed security, privacy and threat intelligence across these domains
- ensure networks can adapt, heal, optimise and sense their infrastructure and environment in real time.
We use AI, digital twins and open network technologies to model and control complex, converged environments. This enables networks that can learn from real-world conditions, predict failures, self-optimise for better decision-making and service assurance.
Driving new research
Through national-scale initiatives such as JOINER, REASON and TITAN, we drive new research and test these principles in practice – integrating 5G/6G, sensing, edge and cloud computing, and in-network compute under a unified, end-to-end architecture. These platforms let us study convergence challenges such as cross-domain security, privacy-preserving data handling, assurance and lifecycle management at realistic scale.
Our work is underpinned by Bristol's world-class open networking and 6G-capable testbeds, where we bring together:
- Infrastructure – Designing ultra-efficient, AI-native wireless access and transport networks that deliver performance where and when it's needed, while meeting energy and sustainability constraints and supporting sensing-enabled services.
- Hardware – Building adaptive, energy-efficient hardware solutions that form the physical backbone for low-latency, high-capacity links and joint communication–sensing operations.
- Software – Developing cloud-native, virtualised and open network platforms and functions, Open RAN, network slicing, end-to-end sensing and inference, edge intelligence and digital twins to make networks fully programmable and context-aware.
Shaping the next decade
By integrating terrestrial, satellite and computational systems within a single converged and sensing-capable ecosystem, we address coverage, interference, spectrum efficiency, resilience and environmental awareness together.
The goal is simple but demanding: build end-to-end networks people can trust. They'll be intelligent, secure, sustainable, sensing-enabled, and ready for the applications that will shape the next decade.
