Exploring the Socioeconomic and Spatial Impacts of Casino Development on Crime and Community Dynamics in Macau
This study examines the social impacts of Macau’s casino industry, the only legal gambling hub in China and a region heavily reliant on gaming revenue. Despite significant contributions to Macau's tourism and economy, gambling-related harms are an increasing concern. Through surveys and interviews, we will analyse how various social groups within local communities perceive gambling and experience related harms, and the mechanisms – whether due to gambling itself or casino-driven tourism – that contribute to local crime. By analysing these disparities, the study aims to guide policymakers in making targeted strategies to reduce social harms and better support community well-being.
