Examining Gambling Harms within LGBTQ+ Communities in the UK
Vulnerability to gambling harms is often driven by social exclusion and discrimination. Two such risk factors are minority sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite evidence suggesting that LGBTQ+ individuals are at risk of gambling harm, research on the impact of gambling harms within LGBTQ+ communities is limited, leaving a lack of a clear picture of the causes of those harms. This project aims to investigate gambling harms present within LGBTQ+ communities, examine the factors that might encourage gambling behaviour among LGBTQ+ individuals, and obtain insight into the lived experiences of those affected by gambling harms. The goal is to inform evidence-based preventative programmes and support.
The project lead is Dr Reece Bush-Evans (Psychology Department) at Bournemouth University.
