Our people

A community of academics, researchers, students and technical specialists spanning Geotechnical, Earthquake and Structural engineering.

Researchers, students and technical team

The wider group includes more than 20 PhD students, over 60 PhD graduates and many research associates.

Our laboratories are run by a dedicated technical team, including a research team leader and specialist technicians who make prototype-scale testing possible, and who train the next generation of experimentalists.

PhD opportunities

We welcome enquiries from prospective doctoral researchers across all three pillars. Funded studentships are advertised throughout the year; strong self-funded candidates are encouraged to contact a potential supervisor directly.

MSc in Structural Engineering

Our flagship taught programme, directed by Dr Toumpanaki, trains engineers in Asset Management and Digital Transformation, Composite Materials and Sustainable Design, and Earthquake Engineering, with hands-on access to the group's world-class facilities.

How PhDs are funded here

Most of our doctoral researchers are funded through UKRI doctoral training partnerships and CDTs, project studentships attached to research grants, international schemes such as the China Scholarship Council, or industry co-funding. Self-funded candidates with a strong proposal are equally welcome; contact a potential supervisor to discuss the route that fits.

Host your fellowship with us

Preparing an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship, Royal Academy of Engineering or Royal Society application? The group has a strong track record of hosting externally funded fellows: we will help shape your proposal and give you access to our facilities and supervision network.
