Postgraduate training is an essential part of the early research career path. Our vision for PGR training at UoB includes ‘train the trainer’ models. We propose to train PGRs in selected strategic areas and to train them to then train and support PGRs in their local environment. In addition, we will support this training with the creation of high-quality online video resources to complement this PGR-led training. PGR advocates will serve as visible, approachable contact points within their schools/faculties, enhancing engagement and fostering ongoing peer-led training.

The Student Research Leaders: Innovating Solutions to Local Challenges project is an initiative designed to diversify the University of Bristol’s Research Culture by providing students from underrepresented backgrounds with real-world research experience. Through a competitive application process, a diverse group of eight students will be selected to tackle a significant local issue.

This project aims to develop an accessible, engaging and informative PGR Supervision Guide which will be shared with all new (and existing) PGR Supervisors at the University of Bristol. The creation of the guide will enhance the quality of the PGR research culture at Bristol through better supporting PGR Supervisors: specifically, the guide will provide supervisors with the information they need to understand their role, support their students, recognize challenges and know where to go for support, ultimately improving the PGR experience.

Promoting emotional intelligence to improve collaborative and interdisciplinary research through a series of workshops focusing on EI techniques and conducting research in diverse and multicultural environments.

Producing a researcher behavioural framework to identify what an effective researcher looks like at different stages in their career, identifying gaps in terms of knowledge, skills and people and making recommendations and effective and inclusive approaches to recruiting researchers.

Offering a reciprocal mentoring scheme where senior academics are mentored by early career researchers creating a more balanced power dynamic and creating safe spaces to explore research culture and how this can be improved at UoB.
