Smart Living: everyday family life in the digital age

Can’t live without Alexa or Google Home? Annoyed by competitive posts or ghosting in the family group chat? Do you have disagreements about family members’ expectations of location sharing or monitoring of a smart doorbell? Perhaps you’re concerned about the impact of technology on family life, or trying to balance access to devices?

Whether you feel excited by the potential of new technologies, nervous about the impact of social media, or just confused or left behind by the pace of change, researchers at the University of Bristol are interested in your views and experiences. We are looking for a diverse range of families.

Participation in the project would include:

  • Showing us around your home so we can see how your devices (e.g. screens, etc.) fit into everyday life;
  • Talking to us as a family about who uses what and when and how;
  • Sharing some of your data with us, such as messages from a WhatsApp family group chat and commands given to smart speakers (families will be able to choose and review what they share and no-one outside the research team will have access to their data);
  • A one-to-one follow up interview with one or more family members.

Participating families will receive cash-equivalent vouchers as a thank-you for their time.
