PERFORM Project: toolkits for researchers and teachers

The PERFORM Project brought together school students, their teachers, and early career researchers in France, Spain and the United Kingdom, to explore a participatory education processes in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Researchers and teachers can use the following project outputs to support introducing RRI principles to their work. The toolkits can be self-directed or facilitated by others.

PERFORM Project Overview (PDF, 2,124kB): Download the project brochure to get a full overview of the project, where it took place, who was involved and what they worked on.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Intro (PDF, 483kB): An introduction to the following toolkits, which share key learning from the two rounds of bespoke training for early career researchers.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Ethics and Integrity (PDF, 88kB): Outlining fundamental responsibilities of the research community, including existing frameworks for Research Ethics and Research Integrity.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Reliability of Scientific Knowledge (PDF, 161kB): Examining the importance of reliability of scientific knowledge, for the scientific community and for society.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Wellbeing (PDF, 99kB): Providing data from studies into researcher mental health, examples of how researchers can build healthy work environments, and tips to ensure wellbeing.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Values in Science (PDF, 143kB): Exploring the ways in which values intersect with science. Introducing the core values of the scientific community and inviting participants to make their own manifesto based on the ideal values of their academic community.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Reflexivity (PDF, 148kB): Inviting researchers to reflect on how their cultural background and personal identity can influence their research activity.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: RRI (PDF, 137kB): Introducing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) as defined by the European Commission and exploring two key aspects of RRI – public engagement and anticipation of possible applications of research.

PERFORM Researcher Toolkit: Performance (PDF, 149kB): Performance methods, including the use of tools such as narrative and character, can be effective for opening discussion on complex ethical issues. This toolkit explores these approaches and proposes a straightforward performance activity.

Watch the Researcher Toolkit videos on YouTube: A resourceful set of videos aimed to help teachers, researchers and science communicators gain inspiration from practical examples and discussion.

The following toolkits have been designed to support teachers working in STEM (science, technology, engineering and methematics).

PERFORM Teacher Toolkit: Intro (PDF, 1,302kB): The performance and discussion-based activities in these toolkits will help students to develop key transferable skills when considering and learning about science.

PERFORM Teacher Toolkit: Science Cards (PDF, 3,824kB): These cards support students to explore ethical issues relating to scientific research and its impact on society.

PERFORM Teacher Videos: Meet the Scientists (PDF, 1,275kB): Five short videos introducing students to real science researchers from across Europe, and how to use the videos in the classroom.

PERFORM Teacher Toolkit: Performance Exercises for Science Lessons (PDF, 197kB): Addressing some of the challenges teachers might face in using performance exercises in science lessons.

PERFORM Teacher Toolkit: Discussion in Science Lessons (PDF, 323kB): Addressing some of the challenges teachers might face in facilitating discussion in science lessons.
