The CPRD is a government service providing access to anonymised NHS primary and secondary care records for public health research

It contains over 40 million total patient lives, with 11 million currently registered patients, covering approx. 16% of the United Kingdom population and recruits a number of additional GP practices each year

It is funded by the NHS National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
- It can be linked to other datasets such as the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mortality information, the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) and cancer registries
