BRIDGES:BKY Bioethics Writing Retreat
Engineers’ House, The Promenade, Clifton Down, Avon, Bristol, BS8 3NB
Early career researcher in bioethics? Looking for time and space to write? Keen to network with other researchers? Apply for a place on the BRIDGES:BKY writing retreat…
Opportunities to come together, in person, have been limited since the advent of the covid-19 pandemic. In the broad field of bioethics, early career researchers in particular have missed opportunities to work, learn and socialise with their colleagues.
The BRIDGES:BKY project offers 10-12 early career researchers the chance to pursue their projects in a writing retreat hosted by the Centre for Ethics in Medicine at the University of Bristol.
When is the retreat?
The writing retreat runs on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd January 2024. (Accommodation will be available, arriving Sunday 21st and departing Wednesday 24th January.) Ideally, applicants will be able to attend both days.
What does the retreat provide?
The retreat is free to attend for successful applicants; BRIDGES:BKY will cover eligible costs (as further explained on the application form). The retreat will provide shared writing spaces, catering during the working day, accommodation, and a contribution towards travel costs. Subject to budget, BRIDGES:BKY may also be able to support other needs (e.g., caring costs). We also aim to host (and cover the costs of) an evening meal together, including with some colleagues at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine at the University of Bristol.
Where is the retreat?
The retreat will run at Engineer’s House, The Promenade, Clifton Down, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 3NB. Accommodation will be provided at a nearby hotel.
Who is eligible to apply?
Early career researchers working in bioethics are eligible to apply. Both terms (“early career researcher” and “bioethics”) will be interpreted broadly. There are a limited number of places, and if there are more eligible applicants than places available, applications will be ranked according to:
- Anticipated benefits of attendance, including equality of opportunity (e.g., if the applicant has not previously had the opportunity to participate in a writing retreat);
- Ability to attend the full retreat, i.e., both days;
- Sustainable travel; and
- Diversity of participants.
Please note that, if awarded a place, you are free to work on any writing project related to bioethics – this might be, for example, a chapter, a publication, a presentation, a grant proposal, etc.
What is BRIDGES:BKY?
BRIDGES:BKY is a collaboration, kindly funded by the Wellcome Trust, between bioethics researchers in Bristol (UK), Yonsei (Seoul, Korea), and Kyoto (Japan). The project primarily aims to build bridges between early career researchers working in bioethics in the UK, Japan, South Korea, and beyond. You can read more about the project here. (Please note that this writing retreat focuses particularly on early career researchers working in bioethics in the UK.)
