Research interests
I work in the fields of smart cities and urban innovation. I am particularly interested in the Internet of Things (IoT), security of cyber-physical systems and systems engineering. This includes for example design of secure IoT applications, open data architectures for urban sensing, smart buildings, energy-efficient deployment of wireless sensor networks, location and data privacy in mobility apps, integration of industrial systems with the IoT etc. In general I am interested in how emerging technologies can be used to deliver a more sustainable future in terms of resource efficiency, system resilience and operational improvement of urban infrastructure.
I am also interested in applying Systems and cybernetics techniques such as system dynamics and viable system modelling, network analytics and game theory for information and risk management. I believe that Systems thinking is a fundamental approach for understanding and dealing with complexity, especially of cities and civic technologies.
Finally, I have experience with digital forensics, looking at the extraction and analysis of digital evidence, particularly from emerging technologies such as mobile phones, wireless sensor networks and social media. On these issues I have provided evidence in court as Expert Witness on a number of cases.
