Research interests
Dr Neelam Hassan is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on osteoporosis and rare bone disorders, using human genetics and translational approaches to understand disease mechanisms and identify new therapeutic targets.
She undertook her preclinical training at the University of Cambridge before completing her medical degree at the University of Oxford. She was awarded an Elizabeth Blackwell Institute Clinical Primer and an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the University of Bristol to identify novel anabolic drug targets for osteoporosis by characterising the genetic basis of high bone mass. Her work has been recognised nationally and internationally with awards from the Bone Research Society, European Calcified Tissue Society and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
Her advisory roles span research, clinical practice, health equity and policy. She serves on the National Osteoporosis Guideline Group and the Bone Research Society Committees, and is on the steering group of the NHS England Adult Rare Bone Disease Network. She is also a member of the international Coalition for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE), having previously served on the steering group for the EULAR (European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology) Taskforce for Gender Equity in Academic Rheumatology. Through her work at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, she has contributed to national policy briefings and the translation of scientific evidence for UK policymakers.
