Biography
My most recent book, Streaming and Screen Culture in the Asia-Pacific (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), co-edited with Dr Louisa Mitchell, is an interdisciplinary essay collection exploring the impact of emergent technologies on the production, distribution and reception of media content in the Asia-Pacific region.
I am currently working closely with colleagues at the Department of Film and Television and the Bristol Digital Game Lab to develop and deliver a digital film and television curriculum, with a key focus on interactive technologies and video games. This resulted in the introduction of an exciting new unit in 2023 titled Approaching Video Games.
I am open to collaboration and I am available for postgraduate supervision, accepting proposals in the following subject areas:
- Contemporary Television
- Video Games
- Streaming Platforms
- AI and Generative Media
- Digital Culture
Research interests
My research is positioned from the intersection of film, television and games and digital technologies.
My research intrerest and specialities include British and American television and television imported from the Asia-Pacific, heritage, video games, streaming platforms, soft power, and film.
I am open to collaborative research partnerships with other colleagues and industry professionals in related field / with similar interests.
My monograph, Northern Exposure A Cultural History (Rowman and Littlefield, 2021), revisits the cult television series, which ran on CBS between 1990-5, and evaluates its cultural legacy on the landscape of contemporary television and fan culture. My forthcoming monograph, Factual Heritage Television (Routledge, due late-2024), investigates factual television’s relationship with British heritage since the financial recession of 2008. This monograph is based on my doctoral research, sponsored by the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH) and awarded by the University of Leeds in 2019.
I am currently finalising an edited collection (to be published with Palgrave Macmillan, late-2024) explores contemporary television’s capacity to elicit empathy. Previous major publications include True Detective: Critical Essays on the HBO Series (Lexington, 2017), co-edited with Dr Scott F. Stoddart, which is an essay collection exploring the first two seasons of HBO series True Detective (2014 –), and a journal special on the legacy of BBC Four for Critical Studies in Television, co-edited with Dr Leanne Weston.
