Research interests
I am a Research Associate interested in flood risk associated with extreme rainfall under current and future climate change.
I am currently working on the NERC-funded FUTURE-FLOOD project, aiming to understand and compare flood risk estimates under climate change using high resolution Convection Permitting Model rainfall data. This project works in collaboration with organisations such as the UK Met Office, Bristol City Council, Environment Agency and Fathom.
My PhD focused on advancing how flood risk estimates in Small Island Developing States under current and future climate change. Through this work, I developed event-based flood inundation models at the local and national scales using spatially-varying Convection Permitting Models and synthetic tropical cyclone rainfall events, as well as analysing the impact of climate change on flood risk using Fathom's global flood hazard maps. Results produced during this PhD are being used by government organisations such as the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology. During this time, I also took a 3-month sabbatical working as a Research Associate with the UK Met Office, as well as working with the governmental and non-governmental organisations in emergency flood response for tropical cyclones in Mozambique and Madagascar. My thoughts on being a scientist working on climate change have also been featured on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Scotland as part of COP26.
During my Masters by Research (MScR) project I developed a methodology to remove vegetation from TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Models using remote sensing techniques. During this project I was under receipt of the JBA Trust/British Hydrological Society MSc Studentship Award Scheme for 2017. I also completed an 8 month internship at environmental consultancy LUC as a GIS consultant.
I graduated from the University of Southampton in July 2017 with a First Class Honours degree in Geography. I was awarded the Fawcett Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the 2017 Geography cohort and the Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences Dean's Award in 2016 and 2017.
