Research interests
I am an Infectious Disease Epidemiologist at the University of Bristol. My research focusses on the epidemiology and control of infections. I am particularly interested in infections which affect children and teenagers, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV.
I use a variety of quantitative methods in my work, including data analysis, mathematical modelling, systematic reviews, and health economics. My research uses these methods to analyse how many people have infections and health conditions caused by infections, the risk factors for these outcomes, the effect on healthcare services, and the potential impact of different interventions.
I produce the World Health Organization global estimates of infection and disease for herpes simplex virus in collaboration with researchers at the University of Bristol, WHO, the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, and others. I am an Expert for the Global Burden of Disease estimates done by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle. I am a member of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit in Behavioural Science and Evaluation at the University of Bristol.
