Research interests
Jeremy Horwood is Professor of Social Sciences and Applied Health Research at the Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), Bristol Medical School.
He is the Optimise Theme Lead for the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (NIHR HPRU) in Evaluation and Behavioural Science and is co‑director of Bristol Health Partners Sexual Health Improvement Programme (SHIP) Health Integration Team. He is also a steering committe memember of Fast Track Cities Bristol.
Jeremy is a social scientist with a background in psychology whose research focuses on:
- Qualitative and mixed‑methods in complex intervention co-development, evaluation and implementation optimisation, drawing on the collaborative, intensive and pragmatic qualitative (CLIP‑Q) approach to enable responsive, real‑time evaluation that supports effective implementation. Also extensive experience integrating qualitative methods within randomised controlled trials to strengthen intervention design and trial conduct.
- Applied public health, sexual health and primary care research, with work spanning infectious disease prevention and management (HIV, PrEP, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), hepatitis B and C, respiratory infections), vaccination uptake, digital health innovation, behaviour change and intervention co‑design.
- Social science perspectives on health, healthcare use and service delivery, focusing on users’ experiences of health and health services, intervention acceptability and co‑production with underserved populations to improve access and reduce health inequalities.
Jeremy is Principal Investigator or qualitative lead on numerous applied health research projects, including:
- Emergency department opt-out HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C testing
- Accessing PrEP through pharmacies to improve HIV prevention
- Common Ambition Bristol: Addressing HIV stigma and testing in partnership with African and Caribbean communities
- Improving mpox advice, guidance and engagement (IMAGE)
- EPIToPe - Evaluating the Population Impact of Hepatitis C Direct Acting Antiviral Treatment as Prevention for People Who Inject Drugs
- ADEPT-2 - A randomised controlled trial of guided self-help for depression for autistic adults
- Improving HIV prevention and testing in GP practices
- Vending machines offering free sexual health testing kits
- The Bristol Evaluation of Advertising Restrictions Study (BEAR study)
- The ADViSE programme: Using sexual health services to support people who have experienced domestic violence and abuse
Jeremy has been involved in successful grant applications from the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), including NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR); NIHR Health Technology Assessment, (HTA), NIHR Public Health Research Programme (PHR).
