Expertise
My research focuses on understanding the causes of poor mental health. I am currently investigating biological mechanisms linking early-life adversity and common mental health problems, including depression and anxiety.
Current positions
Senior Research Fellow

Biography
I am a Senior Research Fellow and psychiatric epidemiologist within the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre Mental Health Theme, and Deputy Lead of the ImmunoPsychiatry Research Group, part of the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit and Centre for Academic Mental Health, at Bristol Medical School.
I have a background in biological sciences and completed a lab-based PhD in glaucoma research at Cardiff University in 2014. With an interest in statistics and big data, I re-trained through an MSc in Bioinformatics in 2015 which introduced me to the field of epidemiology.
I have since been working as a post-doctoral researcher in psychiatric epidemiology, leading a body of work ranging from early-life phenotypic manifestation of genetic liability to psychiatric disorders to the causal role of life-style and nutritional factors in disorder onset.
I am currently a co-investigator and work package co-lead for a Wellcome Mental Health Award, leading a work-package on biological mechanisms underlying anxiety and am PI for an MRF Launchpad grant, investigating the role of cortisol in the relationship between early-life adversity and psychopathology.

Teaching
I deliver learning in epidemiology across several post-graduate programmes, including the MSc in Epidemiology (2024-present), MSc in Public Health (2021-present), and Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych). I am Dissertation Theme Lead for the MSc in Medical Statistics and Health Data Science.
