Research interests
I am a Social Scientist, working in applied health research, with a background in Psychology. I have 15 years research experience, using qualitative methods across many aspects of health and wellbeing. I am especially interested in co-production and innovative ways to share and create impact from research findings.
My PhD at The Centre for Appearance Research, UWE, focussed on young people's body image and appearance concerns. This work involved the innovative use of online focus groups which has subsequently been disseminated via journal articles, presentations, teaching events and a book chapter.
As a post doc at the University of Bath I delivered research exploring doctors’ experiences of personal illness, transition points in their careers and their reasons for leaving practice early. In my role at the NIHR Research Design Service, I also delivered projects around mental health and self harm.
As a qualitative researcher at NIHR ARC West I have been involved in projects based on co-production with minoritised communities in Bristol. Following research with the Bristol Somali community who have children with autism, I led on grants to create a series of short films to increase the impact of our research findings. In my work with Common Ambition Bristol (CAB) I evaluate the process of co-producing improved sexual health services to increase HIV testing and reduce HIV stigma in Bristol's African and Caribbean heritage communities. I also supervise a team of community researchers in the evaluation of CAB's work.
I have experience of teaching qualitative research methods, supervising post graduate students and tutoring undergraduate medical students.
