Statement: court judgement in relation to Natasha Abrahart's death

The family of Natasha Abrahart, a 20-year-old Physics student who very sadly took her own life in April 2018, brought a civil action against the University of Bristol. A judgement, handed down today (Friday 20 May) by His Honour Judge Ralton at Bristol County Court, found the University was not negligent, but deemed the adjustments made by the University for Natasha’s assessment were insufficient. This was despite the absence of a disability summary.

CRUK awards Bristol researcher £1.4 million to investigate cancer growth containment

University of Bristol researcher, Professor Eugenia Piddini from the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, has been awarded a Programme Foundation Award worth £1.4 million by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) to lead research into how the natural properties of normal non-cancer cells can be harnessed to contain cancer growth.

Childhood obesity increases risk of type 1 diabetes

Being overweight in childhood increases the risk of developing type 1 diabetes in later life, according to the findings of a new study that analysed genetic data on over 400,000 individuals. The study, co-led by researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Oxford and published today in Nature Communications, also provides evidence that being overweight over many years from childhood influences the risk of other diseases including asthma, eczema and hypothyroidism.
