New worldwide estimates for herpes simplex virus type 2 published

New global estimates for herpes simplex virus type 2 show that over 400-million people worldwide were infected with the virus in 2012. The estimates underline the extent to which herpes simplex virus type 2 – the virus which causes genital herpes – is widespread throughout the world causing a significant burden of disease. The research, led by University of Bristol academics and the World Health Organisation [WHO], is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

£2.5 million for largest trial to improve outcomes from treatment for blocked leg arteries

Blocked leg arteries – often caused by diabetes or smoking – are very common, but if left untreated can lead to amputation, or even death. To improve blood flow, a procedure called an angioplasty is usually carried out, with patients given blood-thinning drugs afterwards. A new trial led by North Bristol NHS Trust, in collaboration with the University of Bristol and the Centre for Trials Research at Cardiff University, will compare three commonly prescribed blood-thinning tablets to find out which works best.

Superhydrophobic coating protects without the price

A new class of superhydrophobic nanomaterials might simplify the process of protecting surfaces from water. Scientists in the US and UK, including Professor Julian Eastoe of the University of Bristol, have developed a water-repelling material that is inexpensive, nontoxic and can be applied to a variety of surfaces via spray- or spin-coating.
