Every fish needs good neighbours

New research has shown schooling fish constantly change who they decide to pay attention to and respond to one or two neighbours at a time. The study, published in PLOS Computational Biology, developed a new method combining behavioural analyses with a computer model to map the chain of direct interactions in a school of fish. The international research team, that includes the University of Bristol, found individual fish pay attention to its neighbours when the school moves together.

Bristol Is Open wins smart cities award

Bristol Is Open won The Smart Cities Award at a prestigious ceremony last night [Tuesday 29 November]. The project, which is a joint venture between the University and Bristol City Council, was one of four nominees in the Smart Cities category at the World Communications Awards (WCA).

ACCIS CDT triumphs for third consecutive year in best student paper awards

Eric Eckstein, a PhD student in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Composites for Innovation and Science (ACCIS CDT), has won the prestigious Jefferson Goblet award for overall best student paper at the 57th AIAA/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference. Held this year in San Diego, USA, in conjunction with the SciTech Forum and Exposition, this event is the largest aerospace gathering in the world.

Development of new blood test for GPs could help diagnose brain tumours earlier

A new simple blood test for brain tumours that could be used by GPs in primary care will be developed thanks to funding of nearly £500,000 by Cancer Research UK. Around 60,000 patients in the UK are living with a brain tumour but only 20 per cent of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis, partly because they present late with large inoperable tumours.
