Bristol Derby Day set to return – bigger and better than ever!

More than 1,600 student athletes representing nine universities across 30 sports will go head-to-head at Bristol Derby Day 2026 on Wednesday 18 March.

The annual event, delivered by Bristol SU in collaboration with the University’s Sport, Exercise and Health department, has become one of the biggest and most anticipated fixtures in the sporting calendar for universities.

Coombe Dingle Sports Complex will host much of the action, including rugby, hockey, and lacrosse, while other sports such as sailing and squash will take place at venues across the city.

With free entry at each location, plus live music, entertainment, food and refreshments, student spectators are encouraged to come along and show their support throughout the day – creating a true festival of university sport.

Led by Ella Lovibond, Sport and Student Development Officer at the University of Bristol’s Student Union, Derby Day starts from 11am with teams representing the region – and beyond – competing across a packed schedule.

Ella said: “For anyone looking to enjoy high-class sport, a brilliant atmosphere, and lots of local derbies, Derby Day is going to be really exciting. People will be travelling from across the country and the South West region to come to Bristol and experience the day.

“For spectators, you can grab a drink in the sun and cheer on your team, whether you are at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex and just wander around to watch different sports or if you’re on campus, you can go to the Indoor Sports Centre. It’s like a mini-Olympics – there will be something for everyone to enjoy!”

Matt Birch, Director of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University of Bristol, said: “Derby Day is one of the highlights of the year for our student athletes. It’s a chance to represent the University, compete against local rivals and celebrate everything that makes university sport so special.”

“For those taking part in or spectating at this year’s Derby Day – our biggest one yet – expect excitement, high-level competition, moments of magic and drama and an incredible atmosphere – with plenty of food, live music and entertainment thrown in – there will be so much to enjoy!”

As well as Coombe Dingle, other venues for Bristol Derby Day 2026 include The Richmond Building, Chew Valley Sailing Club, Hengrove Promenade, and Redland Green Squash Club, to name a few.
