Patricia Sanchez-Baracaldo was born in Colombia in August 1970 and studied Biology at La Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá. She was awarded a research fellowship at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama before undertaking a PhD in fern evolutionary biology in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Although she was offered a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University to continue her research, Patricia chose instead to move to Bristol to be with her partner and start a family, a decision that shaped both her life and the distinctive, unconventional course of her scientific career.
Once in the UK, Patricia undertook postdoctoral work in the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences studying the molecular ecology of cyanobacteria. She described this as feeling like she was starting her scientific training all over again because this was such a different research area to the focus of her PhD. She decided to go part-time when her first child was born and then stopped actively working in research altogether on the arrival of her second. She chose instead to spend the next 3 to 4 years with her young children, a time she described as “priceless”. Throughout this period, Patricia began to shift her scientific focus, incorporating questions of climate change and Earth history into her earlier evolutionary work. This developed into her long-term research topic: the evolution of cyanobacteria. These organisms were the first to produce oxygen on Earth, and Patricia’s work explored their profound impact on the Earth’s biosphere and past climatic history.
It is testament to Patricia’s characteristic determination, intellectual courage and curiosity, that despite the challenges of a long career break, a young family, and a new research area, she applied for and was awarded a Daphne Jackson Trust fellowship in 2011. These awards are specifically designed to help researchers return to research after a career break and she held it jointly in the University’s School of Biological Sciences and the School of Geographical Sciences in order to link evolutionary biology with palaeoclimate. She then secured a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship in 2012 and moved to the BRIDGE Research Group in the School of Geographical Sciences while retaining her lab in Biology.
There, Patricia established an internationally recognised research group combining genomics, evolutionary biology, geochemistry and paleoclimate to reconstruct the origins and history of life on Earth. Her work suggested that early life evolved in freshwater environments rather than the ocean, and she demonstrated that the diversification of cyanobacteria was closely tied to major planetary events, including global glaciations and shifts in atmospheric oxygen. On the back of these discoveries, she applied for and won a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2017 and was promoted to Professor of Phylogenomics and Microbiology at the University of Bristol in 2023.
She collaborated widely with leading international scientists, including John Raven, Andy Knoll and Andy Ridgwell, and published in influential journals including The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Trends in Evolution and Ecology (TREE), Trends in Microbiology, Nature Communications and Geobiology.
Patricia was very active in the Royal Society’s work, contributing to public engagement events and as a member of the diversity and inclusion committee. Her non-standard academic journey made her a powerful advocate for more inclusive and flexible career pathways in science and she used her enthusiasm and passion for research to articulate the need to support individuals from all backgrounds to pursue research careers. She gave an interview to the Royal Society in which she said, “If you can, work on things you feel passionate about, and know that to reach a particular point, you don’t have to go in a straight line.”
Patricia’s cancer diagnosis in 2018 did little to diminish her intellectual curiosity or generosity towards others. Throughout the following eight years, she continued to produce novel, impactful research, and to support her students and postdoctoral researchers with remarkable commitment, even during periods of acute illness. Her passion and dedication to science stayed strong; just days before her death, with the help of her daughter, she completed revisions to a research paper (Sanchez-Baracaldo and Raven, 2026), that was published shortly afterwards in New Phytologist.
Patricia did not suffer fools gladly, but she brought immense warmth, wit, and generosity to every part of her life and work. Her students, friends, and colleagues in Bristol and across the world will miss her enormously, not only for her intellect and conviction, but for her kindness, and humour. She will be lovingly remembered by her beloved children, Sofia and Pablo, her siblings and extended family.
