Built and run by the Bristol Centre for Supercomputing (BriCS) at the University of Bristol, in partnership with HPE and NVIDIA, and funded by the UK Government, the £225 million national facility has supported around 1,000 research projects involving more than 4,000 users in its first year.
From developing new dementia treatments to building UK language models and improving animal welfare, researchers across the UK, businesses, SMEs and the public sector are using Isambard-AI to tackle problems that were previously beyond the UK's computing capability.
Over the past year, Isambard-AI has also enabled researchers to:
- improve understanding of Alzheimer's disease using AI trained on NHS data
- build sovereign UK large language models supporting British languages including Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish
- create high-resolution air pollution models to improve public health
- strengthen the safety and security of next generation AI systems
- accelerate research into heart disease, cancer and other major health challenges.
Professor Simon McIntosh-Smith, Director of the Bristol Centre for Supercomputing, said: "One year ago, we switched on a national capability that gives UK researchers the computing power to tackle problems at a completely different scale. In just twelve months we've seen extraordinary demand and, more importantly, extraordinary impact.
"From healthcare and climate science to farming and AI safety, researchers are using Isambard-AI to make discoveries that simply weren't possible before. This is what investing in sovereign AI infrastructure looks like: world-class research, economic opportunity and real benefits for society."
Isambard-AI enables breakthrough research
Among the University of Bristol projects benefiting from Isambard-AI is research led by Professor Andrew Dowsey at Bristol Veterinary School, which is using AI and video data to improve the health and welfare of dairy cattle.
Using cameras positioned around a 200-cow herd, researchers are training AI models to recognise subtle behavioural changes that can indicate illness long before symptoms become obvious. By identifying conditions such as mastitis and lameness earlier, the technology could improve animal welfare while helping farmers intervene sooner and reduce economic losses.
Professor Andrew Dowsey, University of Bristol said: "No farmer can watch every animal every minute of every day, but AI can. Isambard-AI gives us the computing power to spot the earliest signs of disease before they're visible to the human eye, helping us intervene sooner, improve animal welfare and reduce the impact of disease on farms. Our ambition is to turn this research into an affordable tool that supports farmers across the UK while helping build a healthier, more sustainable future for livestock farming."

The future of Isambard-AI
With every call for access oversubscribed, the Bristol Centre for Supercomputing is now preparing the next phase of the facility, including new AI inference services and the Bristol AI Data Facility (BRAID), ensuring researchers and innovators across the UK continue to have access to the computing power needed to drive scientific discovery and economic growth.
