Public invited to get involved in dementia research

People over the age of 50 and without a diagnosis of dementia are being asked to consider taking part in dementia prevention research. Members of the public can find out more at the first Bristol Dementia Research Showcase next week [Tuesday 27 February].

The free event is organised by the ReMemBr Group (Research into Memory, the Brain and dementia), a Bristol-based research group jointly led by the University of Bristol and North Bristol NHS Trust.

The group is headed by Dr Elizabeth Coulthard, a practicing neurologist who carries out neuroscience and psychology research into memory, the brain and dementia.

The day will consist of rolling talks from members of the public who have been involved in research together with health professionals and collaborators. There will be two sessions: 10 am to 12 noon and 1.50 to 4pm.

Dr Liz Coulthard, Consultant Senior Lecturer in Dementia Neurology at the University of Bristol and neurologist at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: "The event is a fantastic opportunity for people to hear about some of the dementia research taking place in Bristol.

"People who are willing to volunteer for studies and help us in our quest to beat dementia are the life-blood of our research and are absolutely crucial if we are to keep making progress."

The event is open to anyone wishing to hear more about dementia prevention research, people who are interested in volunteering or who just want to find out more.

The ReMemBr Group (Research into Memory, the Brain and dementia) includes neurologists, psychologist and researchers from both the University of Bristol and North Bristol NHS Trust. We diagnose and treat patients with dementia and also offer clinical research opportunities to people with and without dementia. Our research focuses on early diagnosis of dementia, understanding how memory is stored in the brain and how this can be enhanced and clinical trials of treatment in dementia.
