Marjolijn Dijkman’s LUNÄ (2010), part of her Spike Island exhibition Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, pays tribute to the Lunar Society, a group of eighteenth-century thinkers who met to discuss the topics of their age including exploration, collecting and the possibility of progress. She has reproduced the large oval table around which they held their meetings in a portable, flat-pack form that the artist can transport with her around the world to stage similar conversations.
The second of two such events at Spike Island is hosted by Dr Sheldon. He will be joined by artist Ruth Ewan and historian Malcolm Dick from the University of Birmingham.
The event is free, although booking is required. Please telephone 0117 929 2266 or visit the Spike Island reception for tickets.
