Hilary Benn will also meet members of the University’s International Development and Governance (IDG) Research Group, which is part of the Department of Politics. 

The IDG group has experts working on governance in Africa, Central and South Asia, the Balkans, and the Middle East.  IDG researchers consider world poverty to be a vital political issue.  They work on the politics of aid and western interventions, including Iraq.  IDG members are keen to explain how politics in households, governments and international organisations causes poverty. 

Hilary Benn represents the Department for International Development (DFID) in Cabinet.  DFID leads the British government’s fight against world poverty and supports long-term programmes to help tackle the underlying causes of poverty.  DFID also responds to emergencies, both natural and man-made.

Professor Judith Squires, Head of the Department of Politics at Bristol University, said: “This is an important event, mapping out what the UK Government aims to do to reduce world poverty over the next five years.   It will give members of the University and the public a chance to learn more about the Government’s commitment to linking good governance and poverty reduction.”

Organised by the Department of Politics, the talk will take place next Monday, February 26, in the Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building, Queen’s Road, Bristol, at 12.30 pm.

The talk, open to all, will finish with a question and answer session.
