Potential Olympians from the University of Bristol have been nominated for the prestigious Bristol Sports Awards taking place next month.

Athletes Danny Williams, Hugh Sims Williams and Laura Bechtolsheimer, together with the University’s Sailing First Team have all been nominated in recognition of their sporting achievements, dedication and commitment.

The Bristol Sports Awards recognise and celebrate local sporting talent and achievements from 2005. The awards are the climax to the successful Bristol Sport 2005 initiative, which is a partnership project involving local sports organisations whose aim is to promote active participation, achievement and excellence in sports.

Danny Williams, who recently competed in the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships in Australia, is nominated for Sportsman of the Year and is currently preparing for the 2007 European Championships with Great Britain’s men’s squad.

Also nominated in this category is Hugh Sims Williams, currently ranked third in the UK in Olympic Windsurfing and a sportsman focusing on the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Laura Bechtolsheimer, an outstanding horsewoman and winner of the Senior National British Dressage Championships whilst still a young rider, is a serious contender for Sportswoman of the Year.

Winners of the British University’s Team Racing Championships in 2005, the University’s First VI in Sailing are nominated for Team of the Year.

The winners will be announced at a special awards evening hosted by Alastair Hignell, BBC commentator, journalist and honorary graduate of Bristol University, on Wednesday, March 1.

Jim Holmyard, Sports Performance Manager and member of the judging panel, said: "I am delighted to be involved with the Bristol Sports Awards. The University of Bristol is committed to supporting sporting excellence and I am particularly proud that our students have been nominated for awards.

“All the athletes, coaches and teams nominated have made outstanding contributions to sport from grassroots development to international honours. They represent the cream of a much bigger sporting community in a city that believes in the value of sport to enrich people’s lives."
