Press release issued: 19 March 2002

Expansion of the European Union

Poland's entry into the European Union is set to be the theme of a free public lecture in Bristol by the Vice-President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and former President of the National Bank of Poland.

The lecture, called The economic considerations of European Union enlargement with special reference to Poland, will be given by Dr Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz at Bristol University's Powell Lecture Theatre, H. H. Wills Physics Laboratory, Tyndall Avenue, at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 20.

Dr Gronkiewicz-Waltz is a leading supporter of anti-inflationary policies. She was responsible for reforming Polish banks during the 1990s when a third of Poland's 1,700 banks had solvency problems.

During her time as President of the National Bank of Poland she oversaw the re-domination of the zloty and the move to a managed float of zloty exchange rates. Her lecture is expected to focus on how she is helping Poland ensure it is in a sound economic condition to join the European Union.

Dr George Sanford of the University's Department of Politics said: "Dr Gronkiewicz-Waltz has helped guide Poland through the turbulent transition years to a thriving free-market economy.

"She is rated so highly by Poles that she regularly tops surveys of the country's most trusted public figures."
