Maternal mental health problems during pregnancy are known to associate with offspring mental health problems. Although maternal fatigue during pregnancy is very common little is known about its effects on offspring health.

This study is part of the Oulu Brain and Mind study with several publications on perinatal risk factors and offspring neurodevelopment. The aim of this study is to examine the longitudinal associations of maternal antenatal fatigue and systemic stress, measured with gestational high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, blood pressure and blood glucose, to offspring mental health and atopy until adulthood.

Research data is collected from Northern Finland Birth cohort 1986. The cohort consists of 9 362 mothers and their live-born children from the Northern Finland area, whose birth due date fell between July 1st 1985 and June 30th 1986. Data has been collected with interviews during pregnancy and postnatally by local midwives. Maternal serum samples are available in the Finnish Maternity Cohort of Northern Finland Biobank Borealis. The offspring have been monitored with several questionnaires, clinical examinations, and from national registries during their lifespan, from infancy until mid-adulthood.

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) will be utilized as a comparison/replication-cohort for the NFBC1986 in this research project.
