Decolonizing post-colonial sexuality education: the case of Sri Lankan Tamil young people in the UK

Hosted by the Faculty of Public Health’s Special Interest Group for Sexual and Reproductive Health. This is their first SIG lunch and learn.

In 2019, the announcement of the new 'Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex education and Health Education' guidance received a mixed reaction from various members of the public, including protests from parent groups and religious groups, bringing sexuality education's historical controversial status within the UK and globally to the forefront. However, the voices of young British South Asians were absent from this debate. Join us for this 'lunch and learn' where Dr Theeba Krishnamoorthy shares her PhD research, which explores the sexuality educational experiences of young Sri Lankan Tamils in the UK, across diasporic space and time. Insights from this research have implications for sexual health educators and service providers in the British-Sri Lankan Tamil context but may also be relevant to other postcolonial diaspora groups in the UK.
