Brief abstract: AI holds great promise in addressing grand societal challenges, including the development of a smarter, cleaner electricity grid, the seamless provision of convenient on-demand mobility services, and the ability to deploy resources effectively in disasters. However, this promise can only be realised if citizens are able to trust AI systems. Towards this goal, I will outline our vision of trustworthy citizen-centric AI systems. These are systems that put citizens at their heart, by modelling the constraints and preferences of individuals, by providing suitable incentives and by engaging citizens through continuous feedback. Focusing on incentives, I will discuss recent work on applying concepts from game theory and mechanism design to design cleaner and more efficient smart transportation systems.
